Maybe you love to travel, explore, and learn about new places. Perhaps you want to highlight your cultural roots, your partner’s roots, or the union of both of your cultures. Or, it’s the place where you fell in love, and you want to go back and get married there. Whatever the reason, taking yourself (and your guests) to a different destination for your wedding day can create an even more memorable experience.

Here are 10 perks of choosing to say “I do” abroad

  1. Intimate. Destination weddings make it easy to keep your guest list short and sweet. Depending on the location, more guests are likely to decline attendance (approximately 50-60% will RSVP “no”). As a result, it will be easier for you to have a small, intimate group of close friends and family.
  2. Healthy. Going away kickstarts a mental separation from everyday life, allowing you to cherish this already special time even more.
  3. Longer. With the excuse of travel, you can extend the love celebration over a few days, ensconcing your ceremony in quality time with your partner and other loved ones, with little distraction.
  4. Unique. Your wedding will stand out from local weddings because the backdrops, venue, designs, food, and traditions will be unique to the destination you have chosen.
  5. Culturally significant. Taking your vows in a location whose culture differs from your own is a great opportunity for you and your loved ones to experience something new.
  6. Practical. You can take advantage of the travel and bundle your wedding, honeymoon, and bachelor/bachelorette celebrations on the same trip. This is cost-effective for your wedding party and environmentally beneficial, as fewer trips help reduce your carbon footprint.
  7. Meaningful. Got a specific date in mind? No problem. Destination weddings make it easier to get married on a specific date, even if it falls on a weekday (everyone will already be there on vacation with you!). This is also a great way to reduce venue rental costs.
  8. Affordable. With a reduced guest list, potentially bundled celebrations, and the option a weekday date, your overall costs for the whole affair are likely lower than a those of a local wedding.
  9. Travel. Get some more miles under your belt and share the love for travel with family and friends.
  10. Vacation. Destination weddings often result in people taking more time off than they normally would. By choosing this, you are giving close friends and family the opportunity to unplug, relax, and extend their celebration of love and of each other.
